We made it out of the house … barely! After running around for two days like a chicken with it’s head cut off, we finally made it on the road yesterday. Grandma and Grandpa picked Carter and I up around 3pm and it only took about 45 minutes to get all of our things loaded and ready to go, which I think is absolutely amazing given how much stuff we packed.
We headed south on I-5, cut over on I-205, then back onto I-5 (to skip Portland traffic). Our first stop was a nice rest area just South of Portland call Baldock Rest Area where there were two overflow parking lots nestled into the woods. We arrived around 7:45 and it was still really warm outside, so Carter and I took a walk around the area and got to see the sun starting to fade over a field of golden grass and sun streaming through the trees. Carter was wide-eyed looking at both – it is so much fun to experience things for the first time with a child, gives you a whole new appreciation for everything.
Carter did really well on the drive, only fussing when he was tired or bored. We read a bunch of books and played with toys while he was awake and he slept about a third of the time. Last night was a little painful as he thrashed most of the night (I think he had a tummy ache) and woke up every 2-2.5 hours to feed. Grandma was kind enough to come get him early this morning so I could get another hour of sleep. He woke up in a great mood and right now is sleeping next to me while we head to our next stop.
Originally we were going to meander through Redding and save the coast for the trip back home … until Grandpa looked up the weather and it is supposed to be 107 degrees in Redding today. Needless to say, we are making our way to the 60 degree weather on the coast instead!
